SUMMARY:Let's talk about... Understanding sensory support for your child
DESCRIPTION:Let’s explore the sensory needs of our children and possible strategies that can help with sensory regulation \n\n\n\nChildren with sensory sensitivities may have their behavior\, social interactions\, and development significantly influenced by their surroundings\, whether at home\, school\, or in the community. \n\n\n\nFor example\, a child who is undersensitive might actively seek out constant movement and enjoy physical contact\, such as hugging. As a result\, sitting still and focusing could be challenging for them. Conversely\, a child who is oversensitive may find busy\, brightly lit environments overwhelming and may prefer to avoid loud noises or crowded places. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will help you gain insights into your child’s unique sensory needs and provide practical strategies for sensory regulation\, empowering you to support their well-being more effectively. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us to explore: \n\n\n\n\nThe differences between sensory seekers and avoiders\n\n\n\nHow to recognise behaviours that reflect unmet sensory needs\n\n\n\nPractical tips for creating a sensory-friendly environment\n\n\n\nEffective strategies for managing transitions and helping your child regulate their emotions\n\n\n\n\nThe ‘Let’s talk about…’ sessions are designed by families for families to discuss various topics and learn together. They are facilitated by trained parent-peer workers raising a child with developmental delay or disability. \n\n\n\nOur online sessions are interactive and designed to create a safe\, supportive space for everyone. SUMMARY:Make a social story for your library
DESCRIPTION:A workshop on helping children feel confident when visiting your library Some children prefer familiar routines and may feel anxious when going to new places\, including the library. A simple social story can help prepare them for the day and enjoy the experience.  \n\n\n\nSocial stories or social scripts are a research‑informed practical tool to help all children understand what to expect and feel more at ease. In this workshop\, you will learn how to create a social story tailored for your library that families can print or access online. Social stories can explain routines\, spaces and experiences in a clear\, friendly way to support a smoother\, more confident visit.  \n\n\n\nFacilitated by a librarian\, a parent peer worker and a specialist early childhood teacher\, this practical session will give you the tools to make your library more welcoming and inclusive. They will share both practical strategies and developmental insights to help you create a resource that supports all children and families in your community.  \n\n\n\n\n\nDuring this interactive session\, we will explore: \n\n\n\n\nWhat makes an effective social story \n\n\n\nHow social stories support children and families \n\n\n\nWays libraries can use social stories to promote inclusion \n\n\n\nHow to create a social story that reflects your library’s spaces\, routines and expectations \n\n\n\n\nImportant: Please complete the Building inclusion in libraries eLearning modules before attending. \n\n\n\nOur online sessions are interactive and designed to create a safe\, supportive space for everyone. SUMMARY:Now & Next School
DESCRIPTION:Support your child to thrive at school and develop effective learning goals with educators.   \n\n\n\nEncouraging children to become independent young adults and voice their opinions is an important role for parents. How can we nurture this at school for relevant and achievable learning outcomes for children with disability or developmental delay?  \n\n\n\nParents’ opinions are usually included in developing learning plans with educators\, but without the child’s participation\, the goals developed may not use the child’s strengths and interests for the best outcomes. It’s never too early to start giving children opportunities to make choices.  \n\n\n\nNow & Next School is an evidence-based program to discover your child’s strengths\, coach them to make choices and enhance collaboration with educators for an effective Individual Education Plan.  \n\n\n\nThe four-session program is based on positive psychology\, the science of wellbeing and our Child Voice model (Mahmic & Janson\, 2019).  \n\n\n\n\n\nLearn about: \n\n\n\n\nAchieving better outcomes by working in partnership with educators \n\n\n\nCoaching your child to use their strengths to achieve goals \n\n\n\nPractical strategies for improving your child’s wellbeing  \n\n\n\nTaking a proactive role in developing\, review\, and strengthen your child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) \n\n\n\nFostering your child’s independent decision-making through our Child Voice model and resources \n\n\n\n\nReceive a report tailored to your child and parenting style to use in Goal Builder\, a resource you can bring to planning meetings or IEPs. It ensures that your child’s strengths and well-being are embedded in planning for good outcomes.  \n\n\n\nThis program is also ideal for parents planning their child’s transition to school. \n\n\n\nWhat is our Child Voice model?  \n\n\n\nLearn more about this initiative acknowledged by Australian and international academics\, parents of children with a disability and early childhood professionals in our blog.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is for\n\n\n\nParents\, primary carers\, and family members of primary school-aged children—or children transitioning to school—who have a developmental delay or disability. We encourage registration with a partner\, co-parent or co-carer\, as working together leads to the best benefits.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen\n\n\n\nWeekly online sessions across four weeks. Each session is 2 hours\, and attending all sessions is required. From Tuesday 9 June to Tuesday 30 June 2026\,8pm–10pm AEST AEST/ NSW\, ACT\, VIC and TAS timePlease adjust for your own time zone if needed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere\n\n\n\nDelivered online via Zoom. SUMMARY:Connecting with your child through photography
DESCRIPTION:Encourage your child to express themselves with PhotoVoice… and have fun! \n\n\n\nWhat community activities do young children with a disability or developmental delay enjoy at the library or in their communities? Let them show you with their photos! \n\n\n\nSome children are better at expressing their likes or dislikes through images instead of words. In this two-part workshop\, learn to use PhotoVoice: an activity where you encourage your child to take photos of activities and places they enjoy\, or do not like and find challenging. We would like to focus this session on outings to libraries (though not exclusively). \n\n\n\nFamilies who have done PhotoVoice say that it helped their child become more confident in expressing themselves and making their own choices. \n\n\n\nOur online sessions are interactive and designed to create a safe\, supportive space for everyone. Recordings are not shared. \n\n\n\n\n\nCome along to explore: \n\n\n\n\nHow PhotoVoice enhances family engagement\n\n\n\nWhat photos can your child take\n\n\n\nDescribing the photos in your child’s voice\n\n\n\nHow to upload the photos\n\n\n\n\nIn the second session\, parents can ask further questions about this project and discuss their picture-taking experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial offer\n\n\n\nRegister and attend both sessions to receive a FREE small digital camera so your child can continue to enjoy taking photos after attending the workshop!
