Positive behaviour support therapy

Positive behaviour support specialists help children manage challenging behaviours that may interfere with learning or become dangerous. At Plumtree, sessions can be held at your home, in early childhood education centres, at school, in the community or at our Marrickville centre.

Our child behaviour specialists use tailored programs to help parents understand what their child is communicating through their behaviour and provide guidance for good outcomes. We work closely with families to ensure children can develop appropriate ways to communicate and manage their emotions so they thrive in daily routines.

Evidence shows that most of a child’s learning happens in their natural settings with family and carers. Our positive behaviour support specialists will share strategies that you can use between sessions at home and in the community to achieve your goals.

Frequently asked questions

Why do our positive behaviour support therapists work closely with parents?

Our child behaviour specialists believe parents know their children best. By working closely with you during sessions, we ensure that goals are practical and achieveable. We then create personalised strategies tailored to your child’s unique needs.

Professionals may come and go, but families are the constant support in a child’s life. Good partnerships between therapists and parents ensure that support and learning continue at home, leading to better outcomes for your child. This is because evidence shows that most of a child’s learning happens between therapy sessions. We give you the skills and strategies to make it happen.

How long are therapy sessions?

Sessions times vary but are mostly one hour long. However, they can be longer if that’s the best approach to meet your goals. Sessions can be scheduled weekly or fortnightly over an extended period, or as shorter blocks.

What are the benefits of using NDIS positive behaviour support?

NDIS registered providers meet strict government standards for safety, quality and reliability, which ensures your child receives high-quality support. These providers have verified credentials that safeguard your child’s well-being.

Plumtree is a registered provider of NDIS supports. Our child behaviour specialists are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Plumtree is also a member of the Early Childhood Intervention Best Practice Network NSW, a trusted network of community-based child and family organisations known for delivering quality support.

Do I also need a key worker?

Our positive behaviour support specialists focus on helping children develop appropriate ways to communicate and manage their emotions. They may recommend a Plumtree key worker join your team.

A key worker is your main contact with Plumtree, who may be an occupational therapist, speech pathologist, early childhood special educator or other team member. They have also completed accredited key worker training, and can offer broader support when required to address all the needs of your family. Learn more about key workers

Positive behavioural therapy programs

At Plumtree, we offer a range of tailored speech therapy programs with our NDIS registered speech therapists, as well as privately funded sessions. Our programs are designed to meet the unique needs of each client.

Back on track for challenging behaviour

Parents nurture their children to grow and understand what behaviours are acceptable and useful, but almost every child will challenge them at some stage with behaviours that are puzzling or hard-to-manage. If challenging behaviour disrupts learning opportunities, interferes with relationships, or poses a risk to the child and others, your therapist may recommend our Back on Track program.

Using an evidence-based Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach, we work with parents, carers, or your child’s school team to develop skills that bring positive change. The program includes:

  • A comprehensive behaviour assessment and analysis
  • An explanation of why the behaviour may be happening
  • A plan to replace the behaviour with goals to achieve and strategies to use
  • Training for parents, carers, or the child’s school to implement the strategies
  • Meetings to monitor the behaviour over time and make changes if needed

Back on Track is available for all families. Contact our client relationship manager Elif Erdogan to learn more. Ask your keyworker about including Back on Track if you have a Plumtree Plan and Do package.

Stay informed by subscribing to our newsletter for updates on group programs.

For children with an NDIS package, Plumtree offers a range of specialist support through a range of different programs.

How Plumtree works in educational settings

Outside of our behavioural therapy in Marrickville, we work with you and your child’s school or early childhood centre to ensure our strategies can be implemented in their daily routines. We can make changes to the environment or resources to help your child learn alongside other children.

Collaboration is key for our positive behaviour support therapists and we understand the important relationship you have with your child’s school or place of care. We work hard to build a support team around your child and spend 1.5 hours at your child’s school or early childhood centre to share information and strategies with the staff. This gives your child’s teachers the skills to implement these strategies in their daily routines when we are not present.

Working together with Plumtree

If you decide to appoint Plumtree as your service provider under the NDIA, together we will complete a Service Agreement. This agreement is relevant whether you are Plan-Managed, NDIA-Managed or Self-Managed. We both make agreements to each other to ensure you achieve the goals for your child.
