A parent peer worker-led Q&A on making your library more inclusive as part of your Community of Practice

Meet some of our Libraries as Community Connectors team members to discuss any questions or concerns about including children with developmental delay and disability in your library programs. 

Marie is a trained parent peer worker at Plumtree and a parent of a child with disability or developmental delay. Through her work with families, she hears firsthand about families’ experiences in community settings, including libraries. Rob is a State Library of NSW visiting scholar and library ambassador.

This interactive session provides an opportunity to learn from families, share experiences with library colleagues from across Australia and strengthen your community of practice.

During this interactive session, we will explore:

  • Questions and scenarios raised by library staff
  • What families have shared about their experiences in libraries through our consultations and surveys
  • Practical approaches to making library programs more welcoming and inclusive
  • Opportunities for libraries to share ideas, challenges and examples from their own communities

We recommend completing the Building inclusion in libraries eLearning modules before attending this workshop

Facilitators
Hosted by Rob Thomson, State Library of NSW visiting scholar and library ambassador. Rob was the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) NSW Manager from 2019 to 2023. He is passionate about the role public libraries play in building welcoming and inclusive communities. Rob will facilitate the discussion with Plumtree parent peer worker Marie.

FundingThe Libraries as Community Connectors project is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

Plumtree is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation supporting children with developmental delay, disability and their families. For more than 40 years, we’ve worked alongside families through therapy, parent peer support, playgroups, workshops and community programs. We believe families are the experts on their child, and our professional team and parent peer workers work in partnership with families to support children’s participation, development and everyday life.
We also provide training and resources for professionals, bringing together lived experience and professional expertise to support children’s inclusion and participation in their communities.
